summer, por favor

I sat down last night after putting the kid to sleep to catch up on email and the day’s news. I tried listening to some relaxing music, but all I could hear was the sound of the wind pounding rain against the old windows of our house. It now seems like it’s been far too long since I’ve had a conversation that hasn’t managed to deviate to the subject of the weather and the desire for summer to actually begin in Seattle. I think the biggest problem is that we’ve actually had a few freakishly warm days in the past month or two. <flashback> You wake up that Saturday morning with the sun burning holes through your eyelids; you hop out of bed pack away all of your rain gear, throw on some summer clothing and go dance and sing summer praises in the streets…Then, Monday rolls around and you oversleep. Not because you were up too late the night before soaking your overly-danced feet in the kiddy-pool; but because the sun went back to hiding behind a soggy layer of gray clouds. Sliding your goulashes galoshes onto your blistered feet, you feel utterly defeated—and just a little mad at the world.
So now, I often find myself reminiscing about those gloriously sunny days. Like a few weeks ago when I was tasked with digging a flower bed, but became distracted by Charlie’s love of worms and other critters that happen to live under the ground that I was digging.
Or the time, shortly after Charlie’s Uncle Kevin and Aunt Meghan got back from their trip to Europe. Kevin, a trained culinary master, came over and grilled some heavenly Copper River Salmon for us. It was an incredible meal.

Or the Saturday after the flamingos exhibit opened at Woodland Park Zoo when I towed Charlie in his bicycle trailer up to see them. The zoo celebrated the grand opening with music, pink tschochke, and flamingo flavored Cupcake Royale cupcakes.

Or, last Friday, when the clouds broke just in time for the weekend to begin. We were invited out on our friend’s boat for a cocktail hour and a relaxing ride around Lake Union. We then docked the boat at Dukes and had another delicious seafood dinner.

Perhaps its my fault for claiming that it doesn’t actually rain that much in Seattle; and this is the rain gods’ way of slapping me in the face. Either way, the monsoon must stop. Please. The last thing we need is another grunge-like genre of music to be born from the local group of seasonally depressed angst teens…or thirty-somethings, for that matter. Anybody know how to play the drums? angrily? Pass the heroin; lets ROCK!

This week has been just awful in terms of weather. I wore a wool coat yesterday, for crying out loud! I used to tell people “oh, it doesn’t rain THAT much,” but oh, IT DOES. And if I could kick Seattle’s weather gods in the nuts right now, I would.

I’ll trade you. It’s currently 99.9 degrees here. Yesterday the heat index was 105. It is painful to look outside… so pretty and sunny… but you get out there and it’s like an oven.
Although, a high of 57 sounds pretty yucky. Hopefully it’ll get better for both of us - very soon.

I blame this weather for 27% of my crappy mood. Go away rain!
Do flamingos taste like chicken?

I normally have the opposite problem! I’m kind of hoping for some rain and cloudy skies while I’m here in AK.
I hope you get a little reprieve from the rain soon! It’s sunny here now, so maybe it will move its way south???

the sound of rain is more relaxing to me than music, but I suppose that if it is more commonplace, it would be annoying. Do people still call them “goulashes”? Ha.

They said tonight on King 5 news that this was the coldest first week in June since 1894! We are ready for some SUN. Carly & Scott bought Yamaha Vino scooters and they are out zipping around when the sun peeks out for the odd half hour or so. Here’s hoping Charlie can catch some rays at Lake Union for the 4th of July again this year, but I’m afraid I wouldn’t bet on it. I can’t believe he’s already almost 2. And I can’t wait to meet Betababy! Hope you are having a better time with your pregnancy this time, Andrea. We think of you lots, and enjoy the posts to Alphababy so much.

June 10th 2008, Utah (e.g., western desert climate). It was 50 degrees today. I feel your pain my friend. We are about a month and a half behind as far as the weather is concerned. It’s mid April in Utah.

That’s why people flock to NorCal. Everything is insanely expensive here, but I guess the mild sunny weather is worth it.
I’ve never been to Seattle. I gather it’s best to plan a summer trip.

I just linked to you from Dooce and midway through your post realized we’re neighbors!! So funny, I’m ALWAYS telling people Seattle gets a bad rap and that it actually doesn’t rain that much here…maybe we BOTH jinxed it.
